According to an article by the Associated Press posted on September 9th, 2010, titled “Taiwan couples go whole 9 yards in mass wedding”, some 160+ couples married under the same roof because of the symbolism associated with the ninth day of the ninth month of the 99th year since the founding of the republic. I hate to be nit-picky in these times of nuptial bliss, but isn’t it kind of silly to be using the republic’s “minguo” calendar when the rest of the world is using the real calendar? This article and the said ceremonies would’ve been more appropriate if it had taken place on September, 9th, 2009. Secondly, I could have sworn I have read somewhere in the history books that the said republic was defeated by some communist party in a civil war on the Chinese mainland. Thirdly, why do we keep interchanging the terms Taiwan and the elusive Republic of China as one entity? Gosh darn it! Perhaps I’m just ill informed. It’s not that I don’t have love in my heart, it’s just that before I commit to such a ridiculously indefensible logic for and indeterminate length of time, I’d like to get my facts straight. Regardless, all the best to the newly weds, where ever they may be. For we know all too well the loooooooooooong path of glory that is sure to follow.

Alright, iCrack junkies, if you are traveling to Taipei, Taiwan, and have plans on utilizing the metro rail system (MRT), then the app MetroNav Taipei may come in handy by providing you with the different information associated with riding the train: different lines, destination, arrival/departure time, etc. This Apple app is usually 0.99 cents, but it is free if you download it today. I don’t have access to Apple’s iCrack, thus I leave the apps’ usefulness and user experience up to Apple patrons in our community. Write a review and let us know if it’s any good.

The South Florida chapter of Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual Mother’s Day BBQ at the CB Smith Park (Pavillion 11 and 12) between 12pm and 3pm this Sunday, 5/9/2010. This lunch BBQ is perfectly timed with the Mother’s Day Celebration concert to take place at FIU in Miami, so come out, grab some grub, hang out with friends, and head directly to the concert for an event-filled Sunday especially created for Mom. Four times a year, the South Florida Taiwanese community get together to celebrate our heritage and party like it’s 1999 all over again. Rumor has it that this is a tradition that goes back as long as there have been Taiwanese here in the United States, so it would be very bad luck to not support such a long standing custom.
Come Sunday, 5/9/2010, from 4pm to 6pm, one of these four epic annual events will take place at the Florida International University’s Werthime Performing Arts Center. You are cordially invited to join the festivities where the music of the Phantom of the Opera, The Scent of a Woman, and many more renowned musical masterpieces will be showcased by Taiwanese-American musicians of the highest calibre.
